Sydney Metro (CSM) - Central Station Main Works

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Sydney Metro platform upgrades were delivered by Laing O'Rourke (LOR) underneath the landmark Central Station - Central Walk - a new underground pedestrian concourse to help customers get around Sydney's busiest railway station. Major construction work has now been completed and is mostly open to the public. The renewal of Central Station was designed to cater to growing passenger numbers and improve accessibility.

JDK's involvement included engineering assistance for the excavation and construction of the new underground metro box and the retrofitting of Platforms at Central Station beneath Platforms 13 and Platform 23.

JDK GEOTECH'S INVOLVEMENT

JDK Geotech was engaged by the Laing O'Rourke (LOR) to undertake the project management and delivery of the Permit to Tunnel (PTT) Process of the project. The geotechnical investigation work had been completed by external consultants and the design was undertaken by Aurecon above the new Central Walk.

The project was constructed using a 'top down' construction methodology and involves excavation down to the new metro tunnels 27m below ground level. After the removal of platforms 13, 14, and 15 at the beginning of the project, the LOR Team built the new intercity platforms, which are being used as a traffic deck during the construction of the permanent structure.

VALUE ADDED TO THE PROJECT

JDK delivered the scope of work effectively, ensuring the Client did not damage sensitive surface rail infrastructure or disruption to the rail network. The implementation of systematic data capture and project management under the supervision of our Client LOR was delivered effectively. Geotechnical capture through industry-best technology initiated through JDK's experience on similar infrastructure projects aided in a streamlined information transfer to the principal contractor to ensure they fulfilled the design requirements.
